I’m a life-long athlete. I love to compete: against others and against myself. It’s who I am. There is run lap 1 v2
nothing like stepping up as the fifth and final shot during a penalty kick shoot out in the biggest soccer game of my career against my high school’s biggest rival, and burying the shot in the corner. Nothing beats out sprinting a guy to the finish line after running side by side for the previous 14 miles during  a marathon. Try to top the exhilaration of running your first sub-3 hour marathon to qualify for the Boston Marathon on the same course, in the same city where you stood five years before, at the start of your very first marathon (and running race), and set your very first, seemingly unreachable goal in the sport of doing just that. Is there any better feeling then overcoming two flat tires, two crashes,300 kilometers, more than 10,000 feet of climbing, and two friends abandoning the race, to arrive at the finish line 16 hours later, in the dark, to do something I never thought I was capable of doing?

Sport has always been a refuge, a place where everything else fades away, and nothing else matters except the moment I’m in. And it’s that moment, and everything it brings, whether pain, disappointment, brilliance, or triumph, when I feel – gratefully – most alive.
